About Our Plastic Sheeting

Cutting the polythene film for a polytunnel requires the right tools and precision to ensure a clean, snug fit. You'll need:

  • A sharp cutting tool such as a utility knife, box cutter, or heavy-duty shears/scissors
  • A long, straight edge or ruler
  • A measuring tape
  • A permanent marker
  • Gardening gloves

First, lay the plastic on a clean, flat surface to prevent tears and debris, then:

  1. Measure accurately: Determine the exact dimensions, accounting for overhang or securing requirements. It's recommended that you cut slightly larger than needed – you can always trim later!
  2. Layout and secure: Lay the sheet flat. Use heavy, smooth objects (such as composts or sandbags) to prevent shifting, especially in windy conditions.
  3. Mark the cut line: Use the measuring tape and straight edge to clearly mark the line with the marker. Always double-check your measurements before committing to a cut!
  4. Cut the greenhouse sheeting: Place the straight edge along the line and apply firm pressure. Hold the cutting tool at a slight angle and make multiple light passes for a clean edge. Ensure the blade cuts through all layers if folded, and always cut away from you. A knife is preferable for initial cuts, while shears or scissors are best for curved sections or trimming.
  5. Installation: Gently fold or roll the sheet ready for installation.

Choosing greenhouse sheeting is essential for regulating temperature, managing light, and protecting plants. There are several materials available, each with its own benefits:

  • Polythene (PE): A popular choice that offers cost-effective performance (1-3 year life).
  • Woven polythene: More durable and tear-resistant, suitable for areas that experience high wind/snow (3-5 year life).
  • Polycarbonate panels: Polycarbonate sheets offer rigid, superior insulation for a more permanent structure, although they cost more than polythene sheeting.
  • PVC: Offers fire-retardant protection, high tensile strength, and can be fabricated to any size.

You should also consider other factors, such as material thickness and the amount of light it allows into the greenhouse or polytunnel.

Plastic sheeting thickness:

  • 6mm: Industry standard for permanent, single-layer, outdoor structures (must be UV-treated).
  • 4mm: For temporary or inner layers.
  • 8mm+: Maximum durability, highest cost.

Light:

  • Transparent film: Maximum direct sun, risks plant scorching.
  • Translucent film: Scatters light for deep penetration, reduces scorching, and ensures uniform growth.
